XMPP Mobile TSI-02100-2008-253

mCentric, through the XMPP Mobile project, faces the challenge of developing a new lightweight protocol based on XMPP, developing a client application for mobile telephones and a server application that implement this new protocol, taking advantage of its features.

The goal is to facilitate a translation between XMPP-Mobile and XMPP and the possibility to create an Instant Message (IM) session between different users, independent of the user's mobile operator or country.

This project's objective is the definition of an XMPP-Mobile protocol, covering the XMPP features which will enable mobile IM, initially text messages and presence, followed then by multimedia support.

Benefits

IM systems run internationally, therefore having this service available on one's phone using a local data plan or a flat rate is quite an interesting scenario, where people living in different countries can communicate easily, quickly and inexpensively.

Mobile phones offer more and more capabilities to their users and they demand more and more features which create new ways to communicate. As not all users have high speed data connections on their phones, because of lack of coverage, technical or economical issues, mCentric is designing its XMPP-Mobile protocol to be as efficient as possible to reduce traffic costs and provide optimum performance.
